Warta railway bridge

Map: Warta railway bridge
Steel truss railway bridge over the Warta river is one of the most spectacular bridges found on Łódź Kaliska - Tuplice railway. It is situated in 57,638 kilometer of the line. The bridge was built in 1902 as a part of Warsaw - Kalisz Railway. It is located relatively far to the North from the town in order to adapt to local terrain conditions. Abutments and piers were designed for a double track railway, but in 1902 only one track was built, with the intension of constructing the other track in the future. The first N-truss spans were 44,5 m long and weighed almost 119 tons each. Outers spans were made of steel plate girders to provide passage to the other side of the embankment for vehicles and pedestrians. The steel plate I-beams were supported by exclusively designed steel frames. Due to strategic importance of the bridge it was destroyed during wars. First destruction took place in 1914 and the bridge was rebuilt in 1922-1925. The railway bridge was blown up in 1939 by Polish army and then, after being rebuilt, in 1945 by the German army. In 1945 the bridge was restored to function, at first only one of the tracks was passable. In the 1970s the bridge underwent a thorough renovation when the railway was electrified and then in 2012. New V-truss spans are 44,5 m long and 4,75 m high. The whole bridge weighs almost 1400 tons.
